Ok, so you’re threading the needle here. Most of the time SOG is an excellent indicator of attack zone dominance.

Occasionally, you’ll get games where the offensive unit spends a lot of time in the attack zone but, doesn’t get many pucks on net.

However, in the case of the Flyers/Habs series, the latter is clearly not true. Montreal not only generated SOG, & excellent scoring chances but, they also spent a great deal of time in Philly’s zone.

Lastly, Philly (in games 2,3,& 4) did not show any kind of attack zone dominance. They did however utilize outlet passes and odd-man rushes to their benefit.

In the end, Biron was their saving grace in games 2, 3, & 4. Anyone watching the series in its entirety knows this to be true.

Here is an anology:

If a goal tender save percentage is .900 over a 4 game loosing series sweep, he (just say) let in 7 goals on 70 shots, averaging 17.5 shots per game. 90% would be good, but you still lost. Comparatively if (same series) the winning goalie lets 3 in on 28 series shots his save percentage is .892. On paper, the loosing goalie was better, therefore his team should’ve won. Point- every night is different, stats don’t mean crap.

Let me edit my statement so that you don’t zone in on it all over again. “Goalie play is always a big reason why teams remain in the playoffs. The outcome of a lot of Flyers games came directly from goalie play in the playoffs while other teams haven’t needed to depend on it as much” I’m sure you will figure out a way to tear that a part.
